The Key to Staying Young? Exercise

[Getty Images]

Ok, we all know we *should* exercise. There's literally not one person who honestly thinks, "Sitting on the couch eating Cheetos and watching this Real Housewives rerun is healthier for me than going to the gym." I don't have to convince you...although, life gets crazy sometimes, and getting to the gym every day can be TOUGH.

Well, as if you didn't have enough reasons to go get some exercise, here's another: Exercise is the secret to staying young. For real.

I mean, obviously, certain things come down to genetics. But this new study found that the single biggest factor in staying healthy as you age is whether or not you exercise regularly. Adults who get regular physical activity have more muscle mass, lower bodyfat, lower cholesterol, and stronger immune systems than adults who don't. Hormone levels remain regulated into older age, and blood sugar tends to be normal as well.

And to be clear, you don't need to be doing anything crazy, or acting like you're training for the Olympics to receive these benefits. Go for a daily walk or bike ride. Go swimming. Play a sport. Take a hike. Stroll the beach. Anything to get your body moving and your blood pumping will be a major benefit to you as you age, and keep you looking and feeling younger, even well into your older years!

Think about it: Do you want to be that senior citizen who can barely walk, or do you want to be the senior that's out there enjoying their life? I know which one I'd rather be! Getting older doesn't have to make you frail.  The best way to avoid that is by staying active THROUGHOUT your life.

Salud!
