On Sunday, 35-year-old Simon Wheatcroft of England became the first blind person to run a marathon without a guide leading him along the course.
Simon, who has finished many marathons and ultra-marathons, ran the New York City Marathon wearing a GPS device that detects nearby people, curbs, cars and other obstacles by sending out small vibrating pulses to his arm and chest pads.
While he did have three people shadowing him in case something went extremely wrong, he was able to run among more than 50,000 runners and 2.5 million spectators – and finished the race in 5 hours, 17 minutes and 40 seconds.
