The New Orleans Saints have bolstered their running back depth by acquiring Zamir White from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for linebacker Deion Jones. The trade, reported on Sunday night (August 23), addresses the Saints' immediate need for running backs due to injuries. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Saints are facing a shortage in their backfield with Alvin Kamara sidelined for at least a month due to a sprained knee. Additionally, Devin Neal and Kendre Miller have been limited by injuries during training camp.
White, a 26-year-old running back, was initially signed by the 49ers in early August but was facing tough competition to make the team. His move to New Orleans provides him with an opportunity to compete for a spot in a backfield that has been hit by injuries. White, a fourth-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, has logged 736 rushing yards and 152 receiving yards in his career.
Deion Jones, who joined the Saints just this month, heads to the 49ers, where he reunites with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Jones, a former Pro Bowl linebacker, brings experience to the 49ers' linebacker corps, which has been dealing with injuries to backup players like Jalen Graham.
This player-for-player swap is not uncommon during the preseason as teams adjust their rosters. The Saints previously made a similar trade last year, which worked out well for them. The trade comes as teams prepare to cut down their rosters from 90 to 53 players ahead of the season's start.
