Fort Lauderdale Boat Explosion, Fire Kills One, Injures Five

(Fort Lauderdale, FL) - A boat, possibly being fueled, exploded and caught fire in Fort Lauderdale Monday night.

Fort Lauderdale fire rescue saying the flames spread to another boat docked near a SE 15 Street restaurant.

Officials said they received numerous calls reporting a boat at the Lauderdale Marina had caught fire following an explosion just before 6 p.m.

“A boat explodes. There’s a boat on fire and there were people on the water,” said FLFR Deputy Chief Garret Pingol.

Five people were taken to the hospital, three with traumatic injuries. A dive team finding a sixth person dead in the water.

Multiple agencies are investigating the explosion and fire including the U.S. Coast Guard and a cleanup effort is underway to remove fuel from the water.
