Broward School Board Votes To Keep Mask Mandate; Files Lawsuit

Broward schools will keep the fight going over mandating students be masked in the new school year.

While Broward School Board members agree to state health and education department rules, which allow them to keep their previously agreed to mask mandate as long ask there is a parental opt-out.

Donna Korn said in addition to the agreement, the board members "additionally authorize general counsel and the superintendent to retain outside counsel to evaluate and file legal action to challenge the Department of Health."

The Governor has threatened to de-fund school districts and withhold pay from school board members and superintendents who defy his executive order banning student mask mandates. Board Member Nora Rupert said, "Standing up for our students and our families is part of our job. Being afraid that we're going to lose our job, be removed from office, fined, lose our salary, bring it. Bring it. Because when you put that out there, it makes me work hearder."

Parents from both sides of the masking debate spoke before this afternoon's vote.

Miami-Dade's school board has a meeting next week, at which they're expected to discuss COVID protocols.
