Who makes the best sandwich in Florida?
As a HUGE lover of Cuban food (and the granddaughter of a Cuban immigrant), I admittedly am quite biased in favor of a Cuban sandwich.
Food & Wine Magazine compiled a list of the best sandwiches in each of the 50 states, and the Cuban sandwich at the Columbia Restaurant took Florida's top honor! The original Columbia Restaurant is in Ybor City, but there are a handful of other locations, including Sarasota and St Augustine with very similar menus--although the original Ybor location is a must-visit.
By the way, the Cuban sandwich is a Tampa Bay creation, originally served to Cuban and Sicilian immigrant workers in Ybor City. Miami frequently tries to steal credit for the invention of the Cuban sandwich, but they're lying and they know it. I'll fight you on this.
So if you're in the mood for a Cuban this weekend, hit up the Columbia!
