Baby animal alert! Busch Gardens Tampa has welcomed a new species to the park: Meet Sydney the echidna.
Echidnas are a relative of the Australian platypus, and are unique in that they are mammals that lay eggs! When Sydney was born, she was the size of a jelly bean, but now she's approximately two pounds, and ready to greet visitors at the Animal Connections center in the park. When fully grown, Sydney will be between 8-10 pounds.
Like porcupines, echidnas have hollow spines that protect them and help them camouflage. They also have a beak like a bird, and a pouch like a kangaroo. Next time you're at Busch Gardens, be sure to see Sydney!
