Kip Moore just released his new album, Wild World, on Friday (May 29), which he says is his "deepest project yet." The entire album features deeply personal songs for Moore, especially the final track, "Payin' Hard."
The song finds Moore singing of personal regrets, specifically about missed opportunities with his father, who he lost to cancer at age 63 in 2011.
"I had that bottled up inside of me for years," Moore tells People. "I've carried that weight of regret with a few situations. I kept it all pressed down, and then I let it out, all in one go."
When his father got sick, Moore's career was starting to take off which meant he had several difficult choices to make. "I remember having all these shows booked, and I wanted to get home and hang out with him," Moore shares, "but I also felt the pressures of having to live up to these agreements."
Moore continues to reveal that his dad gave his blessing. "Don't worry about me. I've had a good life," he'd tell his son. But Moore says, "I look back now and wish I would've had my priorities a little more in line."
"And now it's gone the kinda gone that don't come back / I only see him now in dreams that I have," he sings. "I gotta live with that / Lose sleep with that / When I close my eyes / I'll die with that, yeah / My life's a credit card / Play now, pay later / And I'm paying hard."
"Payin' Hard" is one of 13 songs on Wild World. Take a listen to the deep-cut in the video below.
