WWII veteran finally receives medals after 75 years

It’s taken 75 long years, but World War II veteran Peter Fantasia has finally been honored for his military service. The 103-year-old Somerville, Massachusetts man received eight medals in a special ceremony this week. U.S. Representative Seth Moulton presented him with medals including the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and American Defense Service Medal.

Fantasia was serving as a U.S. Army medic when he was captured in France in 1944 and was held as a prisoner of war until he was liberated by Russian forces on April 28, 1945. He previously received the Silver Star, the country’s third-highest award for valor in combat.

“He is a true example to the rest of the country and the community what American heroism is all about,” Moulton says.

That's incredible! I'm so glad he was able to finally receive the formal recognition he earned for service to our country. Thank you, Mr. Fantasia!
