Beauty queen wins pageant with science experiment!

A new Miss Virginia was recently crowned and she set herself apart from the other contestants with an “explosive display of talent.” Camille Schrier, a biochemist and graduate student pursuing her doctor of pharmacy degree, put her skills to use during the talent competition, doing a science experiment instead of singing or dancing.

Schrier’s experiment is known as the "elephant toothpaste" reaction because it causes streams of colorful foam to shoot out of graduated cylinders. She ditched her pageant gown for a lab coat and safety goggles, but kept her high heels and says she knew her unconventional talent was risky, but it paid off.

“As someone who is breaking the boundaries and breaking stereotypes for what talent looks like at Miss America, I wanted to be a little out of the box, and it really worked out,” the new Miss Virginia explains. She says she plans to use her platform to promote women in STEM and she’ll be competing in the Miss America pageant this September.

AMAZING!! Congratulations, Camille!
