"No-Swim" advisory in south Sarasota County

There is a no swim advisory in place for the Venice Pier and surrounding waters.

Sarasota County health officials found "unacceptable levels" of bacteria in the waters at the Venice Fishing Pier. While they are not disclosing the exact nature/source of the bacteria, it could be anything from pet waste, human waste, sewage, wildlife waste, or failed septic systems. No sewage spills have been reported in the area (as of today).

Officials note that the beaches remain open, but visitors should not enter the water. Officials are expected to conduct follow-up tests later today.

UPDATE: The no swim advisory is due to pigeon droppings. Eew.
