Cop gives $575 ticket for throwing cigarette butt out car window

A police chief in British Columbia, Canada saw a 21-year-old driver toss a cigarette butt out the window of his car, so he pulled the driver over to write a littering citation.

When the officer asked the driver why he littered, the driver replied, "Because I didn't want my car to burn." The officer then said, "Then don't smoke in your car," and wrote the ticket.

So here's what I wonder: do you think that a $575 ticket is over the line for an offense as minor as littering? Or do you think it's totally fair, and maybe more people should be ticketed for tossing trash on the ground?

I personally think that it's fair... If you're an adult and you choose to smoke, that's your decision and I'm fine with it. But cigarette butts are the number one most littered item on Earth (people are all upset about plastic straws, but the cigarettes are a MUCH bigger problem!), not to mention the risk of wildfire. Maybe if more people were concerned with getting such a hefty fine, they'd think twice about throwing them out the window.

You're completely free to disagree with me! What are your thoughts?
