Apparently, Millennials and Gen Z-ers view using a period in a text as a form of aggression. A period. As in, the punctuation we use to end a sentence. Oh, did you think we'd already run out of things to be offended about?
In her book on digital etiquette, Kill Reply All, digital culture journalist (that's a thing?) Victoria Turk writes, “Only old people or troubled souls put periods at the end of every sentence.” She goes on to say, “ ... in a messaging conversation, a period is simply not necessary. It’s clear when you’ve finished your thought already, so what function does the period fulfill? As a result, using a period in messaging now looks rather emphatic, and can come across as if you’re quite cross or annoyed.”
We're living in a world where people are perpetually offended by e v e r y t h i n g. I literally have no patience for it. If you are so delicate as to be offended by correct punctuation (of all things!), I can't help you, and I won't cater to you. Proper written communication is important in all fields of work, and I won't apologize for typing or writing in complete sentences, just because especially if it hurts your feelings. I said what I said.
I saw a quote a few weeks ago that said, "If you're easily offended, you're easily manipulated," and I think now is an appropriate time to share it with y'all. Feel free to use it. I think many of you will see the accuracy in it.
