Pembroke Pines, FL - A toddler died Sunday after what investigators describe as an apparent accidental drowning inside a Pembroke Pines neighborhood.

According to police and fire rescue officials, emergency crews were called to a home near Southwest 118th Avenue and Southwest 7th Street, where responders found a child about 1 and a half years old unresponsive.

Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue transported the toddler to Memorial Hospital West, where medical staff attempted lifesaving measures.

Police later confirmed the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities said there is currently no indication that the drowning involved criminal activity.

A review of available public arrest records shows no arrests connected to the incident, and investigators have not suggested any evidence of foul play.

Officials have not released further details about how the child ended up in the water or the events leading to the emergency call.

The case comes during a year in which Florida has recorded a rising number of child drowning deaths.

The Florida Department of Children and Families reports that 112 children have died from drowning statewide in 2025, surpassing last year’s total and marking the highest figure reported since 2007.

According to DCF’s Water Smart program, drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 4.

Officials continue to stress how quickly drownings can occur.

Water safety advocates note that children can slip into water unnoticed within moments, even during brief distractions.

Authorities have not released the name of the child, and the investigation remains ongoing.
