As players with the New York Mets show up in Port St. Lucie for spring training, a high-profile member of the organization has announced he's hanging up his glove.
Heisman Trophy-winning University of Florida and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow says he is retiring from baseball.
Tebow reached the AAA level in 2019 after joining the club three years earlier, spending some time at bat at the St. Lucie facility now named Clover Park.
The 33-year old tweeted his thanks to team President Sandy Alderson, the fans and all of his teammates.
He writes that he loved every minute of the journey, but at this time feels called in other directions and he never wants to be partially in on anything.
"I always want to be 100% in on whatever I choose. Thank you again for everyone's support of this awesome journey in baseball, I'll always cherish my time as a Met."
Tebow didn't get to play in 2020 as Major League Baseball cancelled its minor league season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
