Florida first responders are concerned about a potential spike in the number of fireworks-related injuries this year.
"Personal fireworks sales have been higher than usual, which means that many people who are not familiar with using fireworks will be lighting fireworks this year."
That's why Assistant West Palm Beach Fire Chief Brent Bloomfield is out with some tips:
"Never point or throw fireworks at another person. Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting. Never ignite devices in a container. Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks as they can explode in your hand."
He also urges you to soak used fireworks in water for hours before throwing them in the trash.
Bloomfield says one reason more people are taking the D.I.Y. approach this Independence Day is that most public fireworks displays have been canceled and another is that a new state law allows the use of fireworks more potent than sparklers on July 4th and two other days out of the year.
He's urging residents to practice social distancing if hanging out with large groups at home this holiday.
Florida's Chief Financial Officer and Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis has also put out a list of fireworks safety tips.
