Montreal Welcomes Rays Plan to Split Season with Florida

MONTREAL, Canada -- The man likely to lead the Canadian end of the Tampa Bay Rays' effort to move 40 home games from St. Petersburg to Montreal is welcoming the offer of a split season.

Stephen Bronfman has been leading the campaign to bring major league baseball back to Montreal, which was abandoned by the Expos in 2004 when they moved to Washington.

Bronfman calls the proposal "progressive" and Rays owner Stu Sternberg "a stand up guy"... insisting that Sternberg doesn't want to strip the team from the Tampa Bay area

Bronfman said the Montreal group would begin sharing information as soon as lease issues with St. Petersburg are cleared up. He said the Rays would share information about their stadium efforts, referencing the unsuccessful proposal to build a stadium in Ybor City, which he called "Why-bor." He says the plan would allow the Rays to better compete with teams like the New York Yankees when it comes to "moneyball."

Bronfman says there are plenty of issues on the Montreal end, including where to build a new ballpark, how to pay for it, and what to put in it when there's no baseball.
