Military Appears Poised To Shoot Down Chinese Balloon

UPDATE at 2:47 p.m. — Reports suggest the balloon has been shot down.

(DEVELOPING STORY AT 2:41 p.m.) — A “Department of Homeland Security Operation” is apparently underway as the United States military appears poised to shoot down the Chinese Spy Balloon. It is now hovering over, or approaching, the Eastern Seaboard.

Airports in North Carolina and South Carolina are under an FAA “ground stop” as of 2:40 p.m. Air traffic in South Florida does not appear to be directly affected, although airports in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are both reporting delays — attributed, according to the FAA, to thunderstorms in the area.

The shoot-down is expected to happen before 3:30 p.m. eastern time, when the current ground stop expires.

This is a developing story. Experts, insight, and analysis Monday morning from 6-10 a.m. on South Florida’s First News with Andrew Colton on NewsRadio 610 WIOD, streaming on the iHeart Radio app.
