Florida Lawmakers Discuss Palmetto Expressway Traffic Woes

Palmetto Expressway improvements announced at the state capitol Tuesday are meant to ease growing traffic congestion problems in Miami. Several South Florida lawmakers announced the changes, which will be completed by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Changes to the road will include opening one northbound express lane to all traffic, adding an extra lane traveling southbound and eliminating tolls on non-express lanes. Representative Bryan Avila says Miami’s traffic issues cause quality of life issues for residents.

“The fact that we are spending about a week, in terms of peak hour traffic, throughout an entire year is obviously very concerning. That leads to, obviously, the economic factor which is a four-billion-dollar economic loss for the community,” said Avila.

A timeline for completion of the project has yet to be announced.
