When head coach Lovie Smith was hired it was no secret changes on the roster were coming for the Buccaneers. Some changes have already been made, there are still two positions on the field worth monitoring as they wrap up Phase 3 of their offseason workouts.
At offensive guard, the team was high on hopes for a return by All-Pro guard Carl Nicks. Those hopes may be fading a bit. Jamon Meredith and Oniel Cousins have seen lots of work at guard this offseason during mini-camps. Patrick Omameh has also seen work. The release of both left tackle Donald Penn and right guard Davin Joseph along with the trade of center Jeremy Zuttah have made filling holes across the offensive line more difficult than what some had hoped.
Tampa Bay did sign left tackle Anthony Collins and center Evan Dietrich-Smith to fill the void of Penn and Joseph, but losing Zuttah's versatility makes makes finding the perfect fit along the interior part of the line more difficult.
At the wide receiver position, the first two spots on the depth chart will be taken up by Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans — unless something happens to either one. But from the slot receiver on down, the coaching staff has their work cut out for them. Sixth-round draft pick Robert Herron, free agent acquisition Louis Murphy and returning receivers Chris Owusu and Eric Page are all fighting for the third and fourth spots on the depth chart. Others like Lavelle Hawkins, Solomon Patton and Tommy Streeter are all trying to make it on the roster.
The linemen and receivers have all seen a good amount of looks during OTAs. With lots of names to fill limited spots for both positions, the decision will be difficult for the coaching staff. But it's important since both positions are crucial for the offensive scheme.
