The Florida Highway Patrol says there are more than 455 licensed drivers in Florida who are more than 100 years old, 16 of them in Hillsborough County, 39 in Pinellas.

Aging experts say it should be ability, not age that determines how long someone should be allowed to drive.

Most of the older drivers are the safest...they don't speed and they rarely travel far.

Highway patrol says accidents involving drivers of advanced age are rare.

"Those are typically the safest drivers we have on the road. The crash rates are testimonial to that fact," he said.
