MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Three swimmers were rescued Thursday just after 6 p.m. near Madeira Beach, just north of the John's Pass entrance, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say the trio, two men and a woman, went out past the buoys, but then two of them were unable to get back to the beach from higher than normal surf and rip currents.

When one of the men reached land, deputies say he flagged someone down for help and asked them to call 911. Once deputies reached the woman, she was taken to a local hospital as a precaution since she was exhausted and had swallowed water while the other man rescued was treated at the scene, deputies say.
