(Tampa, Fla. - WFLA)  The Florida Department of Health reports three imported cases of a mosquito-borne virus in the state of Florida: one in Hillsborough County and the others in Miami-Dade and Broward.

The virus is known as "chikungunya" and has been a concern to health officials since the disease began spreading through neighboring countries in late 2013.

The disease is not typically fatal, but it can cause severe joint pain that can last for months. The Hillsborough County case involves a 44-year-old woman who became infected during a trip to the Caribbean. The South Florida cases were also contracted in the Caribbean.
