(970 WFLA) - The appropriations committee in the Florida Senate okays a 75 mile-per-hour speed limit in the Sunshine State.

Senator Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth) says his bill (SB392) would allow the Florida DOT to raise the speed limit on highways as long as they're not in urban areas.

Opponents of the bill say higher speed limits will mean more crashes, injuries and fatalities.

Clemens says the same concerns were raised when the feds abolished the 55 mile an hour speed limit in 1995, but the number of crashes and fatalities has been declining ever since.
