ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA) - St. Petersburg police say detectives were working undercover in the area of 26th St. and 2nd Ave. North just before 6pm Tuesday night, where three teens (2 girls and a boy) were reported to be trying car door handles.

During the surveillance, police say one of the teens opened the door and attempted to burglarize one of the undercover vehicles, not realizing there was a detective inside.

The teens tried to run away, police say, but detectives were able to catch and arrest them. They also had burglary tools in their possession, police say.

Police say the teens, ages 13, 14, and 15, are suspected in other car burglaries in the city of St. Petersburg, and admitted to burglaries in Madeira Beach and Clearwater.
