TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Police are investigating a fatal crash that left a 2-year-old boy dead.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. at the Tampa Park Apartments.

Police say a driver, who was operating his city of Tampa vehicle, was leaving the apartment complex Thursday night at a slow speed when the toddler ran in front of him. The driver did not see the child go into the street and was unable to avoid hitting him, police said. When he realized what happened, police say the driver got out and tried to help the boy.

When officers arrived on scene they say they found a security guard at the complex performing CPR on 2-year-old Demetrick Lindsey. Police say the toddler was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

At this time, police say the fatal incident appears to be a tragic accident.
